How we design systems
We do not start by choosing technology. First we define what the system should do, who will evolve it and what each part should own.
- Product need
- Application features
- Shared services
- Runtime environment
Put each responsibility in the right place
- 01
The application owns the product
Business rules and product behavior should be clear in its code. This makes them easier to evolve and verify without mixing them with server or vendor configuration.
- 02
Shared services handle shared needs
Identity, queues, caching, file storage and API gateways can be shared across applications when that improves security, reliability or operating cost.
- 03
The platform runs and observes the system
We plan servers, networking, backups, monitoring and deployment to fit the requirements. That might mean a single server, bare metal, a k3s/Kubernetes cluster or cloud.
- 04
Integrations have clear boundaries
We choose APIs, messages and asynchronous processing to fit the workflow. Kafka or RabbitMQ comes in when scale or the nature of the task calls for it.
Keep it simple when you can. Add complexity when you need it.
A small website does not need distributed-system architecture. An enterprise system may need clear boundaries, fault tolerance, access control and independent scaling. We match complexity to risk, scale and plans for growth.
